Klang has always been popular and well known with Bah Kut Teh (braised pork with herbal soup) but from what I’ve tasted, there are still a few shops around the PJ area that might be as good as some in of those served in Klang. Even in Melaka, there seemed to be a few that is rather popular. And honestly, I have no idea that the local Bah Kut Teh also comes with different styles according to China provinces. Melaka has got a famous one that sells the Teo Chew Bah Kut Teh.
Upon arriving at the corner lot restaurant, it seemed pretty peaceful and quiet from far. Parking spaces are available so there aren’t any inconveniences at all. Except that you should remember to get your parking coupon prior to parking. However, those parking coupon are normally available almost everywhere in Melaka town.
What’s calm from the outside is definitely a bluff because when I enter the shop it was ..um….packed with people. The tables were all full. I had to wait a little while before I got my seat. And while waiting for my food to be served, I also observed the crowd and noticed that almost every customer would have to eventually wait for an average time of 20 minutes before getting their seat. Also, according to the owner, the ingredients would have been almost sold out by 1 or 2 pm on a busy day like Sunday. So my advice is to visit them in the morning if you wanna have a taste of what they serve.
The next thing that caught my attention, well actually it was the first. When approaching the shop, there would be this loud screaming sound which would be impossible to decipher the content of that noise coming out from the shop itself. The food is not prepared in the kitchen but right in the middle of the shop itself. And the cook would yell non-stop for as long as you are there. I took a short clip, hopefully someone could tell me what was he yelling…

The noise stops bothering me upon the arrival of my orders. The Bah kut teh was served with some celery instead of the usual green lettuce. And some standard ingredients like the assorted pork and mushrooms.
Together with some yam rice (optional) and you tiao(fried beard stick), the combination is always perfect. Whoever came up with this custom is a genius. And the minced garlic to go with it is also another brilliant combination!
There are stir fried vegetables to go with the meal, but also depending on the availability of the vegetables on that particular day. Most Bah kut teh shop sells simple garlic stir fried vegetables. This one is not any different, except I didn’t like it too oily.
They have got other dishes like vinegar pork and all but I really can’t take so much pork at a day. Thus, I turned down the offer. I went for pork intestines instead, trying to be heroic after watching too much of Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Food. It was a horrible experience I never regretted. Those kidneys tasted a bit harder than tofu, slightly tough but not too chewy, and it doesn’t quite have the texture meat.
The restaurant is apparently quite famous, and according to some of those regular customers, it is almost always packed when approaching lunch hour.

celery in Bak Kut Teh? Would it too overpowering to the BKT soup?
