Calanthe Art Café – 13 States Coffee, Melaka (Jonker Street)

Some things are best kept secret. But here at the Calanthe art in Melaka, the greens and beautiful plants that are hidden from the view from the facade is where you can dine in at cosy ambience and at the same time keeping your feeding frenzy from prying eyes are literally all over social medias since they started operating years ago. With a nature inspired garden sanctuary, there are pebbles and plants and natural ray of sunlight coming through the high ventilating attic of the heritage building, it remains a beautiful place to visit in Melaka. Especially, when they are being well known to be serving local coffee from all 13 states of Malaysia all under one roof- and not just any roof but a beautiful one.

Every corner is eye candy and one can spend hours in this gallery cum café without realizing how fast time passes by. Packed with vintage collectibles and stocked with colourful paintings, this is absolutely worthy of a visit in Jonker Street.

If there is any difficulty at all to decide, there is a brief description on coffee of each state although I was really hopping that they would include taste profile as well. All in all, most importantly it’s the mood at that very moment when you are at the cafe. I’ve personally tried a couple of them and I do like the Melaka coffee in some ways but I’m going to be very honest that I’ve not tried all 13 states to crown this one as the best. Serving is very authentically local – with our kopitiam cup, and playfully accompanied by a piece of cracker to go with your coffee. Of course there are non caffeine beverages as well. On a hot afternoon, fruit slush is da bomb.

Forget about their food though. The cafe is wedged between too many delicious temptations. Some with plenty of assortment and varieties, and some that comes with plenty of history; it is never a wise move to fill up your quota with the food here. Creamy Curry Butter Chicken is not as disappointed as their desert, in contrary it was surprisingly tasty to my liking; this one is easy to get approval or even an applause with their chicken pieces being tenderly pleasant. But still not a strong pull factor to dine in.

If it is a leisure trip to Melaka and you have extra time to spare, Calanthe Art café is a great place to taste local coffee. The only thing you should worry about is whether you can handle all 13 cups of coffee. Or not, you’ll be battling to pick a state.

Me and my hubby was in Calanthe Art Café last week Sat (17th Feb 2018) at about 12.30noon. The place was not fully occupied and we were waiting for a couple to finish their drinks before we seat at the place we usually sit. After the couple left we sat there to enjoy our coffee, the waitress a Chinese girl rudely came to us and said you get up and sit over the other side because they was 4 of a Chinese wanted to seat where we were seating. There was ample of space but the waitress insist we get up, I and my hubby got up and left the place without having our favourite coffee and told her that we waited for the table and its truly not fair to us to get up as there was ample of space. Whether 2 people or 4 people customer is customer. Please treat everyone with equality. This was sure disappointment to us and we will never go to this café again.
