It is common to have neighbouring countries sharing the similar influence and recipe across boarders but Indonesia itself is unique when it comes to local flavours. The Indonesia Archipelago has a rich and long history including abundance of influence from early immigrants and the different rulers. And because they don’t cross borders to neighbour countries, some dishes are very traditionally only available in Indonesia itself.

Dig into traditional Javanese cuisine and a must have would be the Gudeg. The dish itself is uniquely Indonesia and away from Indonesia, it is hard to find any other dish that resembles or having the slightest similarity. Gudeg is a dish of stewed young jack fruit commonly served with meat and white rice.

Young Jackfruits, also known locally as gori, is surprisingly tasty after cooking. Cooked over low heat with coconut milk and palm sugar, and thicken during cooking with bumbu mix consisting of an amazing combination of spices and herbs. Dominated by mostly the way locals like their food- sweet, young and unripe jackfruit is perfect for this recipe. Not only is in a lovely texture to chew, the palm sugar really compliments the young jackfruit to enhance the sweetness. Commonly accompanying the dish is tempeh or beef sambal. This here that I have was the dry Gudeg and after trying this, I really would like to taste the other version of this dish, the wet Gudeg.

Gudeg is found everywhere in Yogyakarta. You can enjoy the unique sweet taste of Gudeg that I had at Gudeg bu Ahmad. Skip the meat and replace it with tempeh and this would be the most delicious vegan meal. The shop is neat and clean albeit a little hot on some days. But hey, there is always The Sorso (local tea) with ice !
