We already have our roll call of fusion restaurants but the recent addition really puts a unique spin to it. Kaiju at APW Bangsar is a contemporary no-nonsense Japanese-Thai fusion restaurant designed for both sharing tapas style and ala carte dishes. The menu is simple and classy with a short list of snack and main. Classy Japanaese ingredients are given some Thai treatment, in dishes like Tom Yum Udon (RM 26) and Yoyoki Tuna Tataki (RM 26) here with the later being my absolute favourite. Papaya salad that accompanies their very consistent and equal cut size of tuna pieces makes this quite an amazing starter or snack.
Like the Tom Yum Udon, their Salmon Manow Nabe (RM 26) is also serving fish paste noodle. This one is perpetually kept at warm temperature on the mini stove and filled with aplenty of salmon, squid, mushroom, tofu, vegetables and Thai manow sauce. The sour from lime with a tinge of spicy spells Thai flavour where as the fresh ingredients speaks for the Japanese flavours. Most of their sea harvests are very well rendered even though the options are few.
As a regular, dishes with seafood are very strongly recommended. I wouldn’t recommend anything without seafood in it but the creative Okinawa Bittergourd (RM 18) was interestingly added with cube duck. This bittergourd omelet dish that most of us are familiar with is instantly modernized with this clever touch. Alas, it wasn’t superb and is totally ok to skip this one unless if you have that bittergourd crave like I do. And since I am obsessed with the greens, the Sashimin Salad (RM 26) was also being requested. The order came and I am obviously happy with the custardy yolk in the egg on top of the mélange of vegetable, sashimi, cheese, lotus, and house salad sauce.
Kaiju has limited space to offer but with brisk service and that consistency in their food, this place remains on top of the to-go list for casual meals. Drinks are not too fancy but you’d love their alcohol and power drinks. Followers on my snapchat or instagram are probably already bored with my stories, seeing this so frequently. But if you have not seen them, I’ve saved some of what I’ve had for a quick look of what’s the rave about this place.

Impeccable service and innovative fusion dishes is a good reason to visit this place, but the long waiting line in such tiny but cosy space maybe the only challenge. Oh and when you are there, look up at the first-rate setting on the ceiling as well.
