Ice: a designated antidote to our swelter, and your best after meal dessert

Living in Malaysia means abundance of sun and rain but in general of mostly the swelteringly hot. From ice creams to soft serve to shaved ice, it’s proven Malaysians love icy desserts. Of course, there’s nothing more appealing than an ice-cold drink or snack when it’s almost always hot out there. And the shaved ice in many forms is getting more and more popular these days. Aftermeal dessert is one that’s shaving down some crazy mound both topped and pilling with sweet, and delicious combination of ingredients. They are close to one of the best things here in Uptown Damansara if not the best. I personally don’t like heavy desserts most of the time so ice is great. Ice is shaved ultra-thin rather than crushed or pulverized, resulting in a very fluffy, airy ice that doesn’t clump up but just gently melts as you spoon it into your mouth. Dig into the fluff pile because both the top and bottom of it is that sweet factor.

Starting with Royal Matcha (RM 27), rich flavour of delicious matcha powder covering our ice and thick matcha concentrate to pour over. Moving to the surprise factor is when digging into the dessert.  With a scoop of luscious and rich creamy ice cream within the core of the icy mountain pile of snowy ice, it’s so clever to plant such surprise within the ice, instead of on top of it. Because it’s obviously so much easier and cleverer to eat- this way you don’t risk the scoop of ice cream come tumble clumsily and rolling off your dessert! I love it!

Classic grass jelly (RM 16) isn’t overly sweet and if I may describe this as a cross between herbal jelly and grass jelly. This is a fun texture to go with the fluffy ice- topped with red bean and almond slices. At the side, the brown sugar fresh milk adds flavor but it’s good on its own.

And the best selection of dessert for after a heavy meal should be the acerb Calamansi shaved, to cut through any relenting from your meal. Calamansi Yokan (RM16) is sharp tangy with cubes of citrus jelly but balanced with sweet longan and popping pops of pearls. Myself is not a fan of such tang and sweet but  if you like Taiwanese style “Ai-yu-bing”, you are gonna love this one.

Meant to be shared, the Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori (RM22) was the most popular dessert here, made perfect for the scorching weather. The shaved ice was made from a premium blend of tie guan yin and milk – not too milk nor too sweet, and at the side, a dainty bowl of house made taro mochi topped with chewy pearls.

To top it off and away from the peak of the mountain of ice, boba, taro and sweet potato balls were served separately, accompanying every bowl of shaved ice. And I would absolutely advice sharing although, depending on your intake portion size, is doable to consume all to yourself. It’s not just shaved ice ok. Aftermeal desserts are serving delectable artwork with a plethora of texture from every single dessert. I say we can get acquainted with the glorious selection of choices here at the Aftermeal Dessert, for some awesome and somewhat healthier-ish after meal dessert. And remember this, shaved ice basically trolls the fool who tries to shoot it and eat it before it melts. Hahaha.
