The Gastro Project at Sekyen 17 is an establishment with the dining room almost sepulchral in its formality plus smiling but no-nonsense service the moment you walk in. Well polished with paintings on the wall, leather seats and a bar, and calming lighting from the pendant lights, dining is made comfortable with such atmosphere.
Bar offers a great selection of cocktails/mocktails as well as decent wines to pair with the line of dishes on their menu. Here is HMMMM… (RM 25) with fresh strawberries, brown sugar, dark rums, and almonds, and the Lemon Gingerini with ginger syrup, and lemon juice that in this case, was slightly sort of overpowering the ginger.
Surprised with the lineup of dishes both old and new, almost every dish was top quality and beautifully prepared. Starters were simple yet delicious with the refreshing ingredients – pomegranate seed, toasted pine nuts, avocado, and onions. The result, a healthier trend called the Japanese Salad.
Heartwarming choice of soup on their new menu, serves the Potato and Leek Soup and atop the usual Italian favourites like pastas, you’ll find fresh herbs and low sodium sauces. Orecchiette from their current menu serves al dante shells with lamb meatballs, sausages and sundried tomatoes.
Also lovely from menu, the Lamb Rack with lamb mint jus. Awesome flavour from the sauce and contrast with the smooth pink center of soft lean lamb, together with potato and vegetables at the side, making this quite a beautiful blast of flavour and texture.
And introducing the new menu executed by the new Chef, Mohmed Sazali Long, Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Bacon and Chili Padi that is gentle with the flavours, retaining the lightly pungent oil flavour but none of its oiliness with the subtle sublime flavor of real garlic with a tact spiciness from the cili padi.
For the fish lover, Barramundi with Hong Kong Kai Lan and Anchovy Butter – simple and tasty with a plump fillet that is fresh and delicious with lovely companion of kailan.
With Mother’s Day around the corner, book early for their Mother’s Day Menu starting with something a little closer to Asian palate; either the Clear Consommé with Chicken Wanton or the Tomato Consommé with Vegetables Wanton (vegetarian). And the mains includes a selection of either theOven Baked Salmon Fillet with Orange Buerre Blanc and sauteed Vegetables,Parmaggiano Cheese Crust Chicken Breast with Sauteed Japanese Mushroom and Supreme Foam or that Light Creamy Feeling Pasta with Porcine and Wild Mushroom (vegetarian).
I am all head over heals with the earthy combination of that medley combinations of oyster mushrooms, yellow boletus, grey agarics, honey mushrooms, cloud ear and shiitake in this vegetarian pasta. The plate was literally polished to the very last bit of it.
Completing the mother’s day celebration would be their Caramelised Apple Mille Feuille with Ricotta Cheese and Korean Strawberry but it wasn’t something too fancy. In fact, the Passion Fruit Creme Brulee didn’t quite impressed most of us.
This Mother’s Day treat is priced at an affordable pricing of RM 80 ++ per person. The use of good ingredient and skillful crafting of each dish deserves applauding if not a standing ovation. Gastro Project cleverly straddles casual and fine dining, leaning a little more towards the later but without cost that’ll dent your wallet that’s for sure.
Take note that Gastro project runs their Supper Club every 2nd and 4th week of the month, accommodating approximately 20 pax and is already getting a good respond from their regulars. Time to make that reservation.

So many foreign words for this restaurant. :/
The names? Nah.. don’t worry about that. Ask for recommendations when you order. 🙂
A very good review, SY!

Ooh, that apple dessert – yum!!
Ah…. I know many would be attracted to the looks of it. But really, that one was not super fabulous.
