Steeped in tradition, The Majestic Malacca has been holding up to what represents Melaka best- the heritage of Peranakan Baba and Nyonya. Serving their signature afternoon tea in the restored Straits Settlement mansion, with Victorian tiles, is a quintessential colonial experience. The affair begins with selecting the choice of tea, creating a sense of high tea. This Peranakan high tea is served on tiers with delicately made pieces of glutinous rice dessert, coconut milk dessert, and those mainly with pandan infused and naturally stained colours. The tiers of playful dessert are there to surprise your palate with lots of sugar but it also includes savoury sandwiches and the popular Peranakan tart shell kuih, the Pai Tee.
Egg tart, pineapple tart, scones, kuih lapis, ondeh ondeh, santan gula melaka cendol or Pulut Kung Kaya; most of the traditional kuih is made with lots of coconut and coconut milk, and takes hours to prepare. It gets better when you are staying at the hotel because If you’ve been following my #YTLNomad journey, you’ll see that guests checked into the hotel also gets to enjoy traditional kuih in the room, just right before dinner time. I love this in room service very much, the feeling was amazing knowing that I was very well taken care off just by making sure that their guests will never be hungry. I honestly say that throughout the stay at the hotel, the basket of kuihs delivered to our rooms were so much more delicious than that of what we get from the tiers in our high tea session.
